Westfields require harnesses specifically designed for the unique needs of the car.

The cockpits are very compact, and there is limited space for excess webbing. Adjustment needs to be both accessible and simple to operate.

For Westfields with racing seats, there are even more precise requirements.

So, where should you begin?

Will your Westfield be used primarily on the road, for track days, or in FIA events?

Road Use

Road-approved Westfield harnesses can come in 3 point, 4 point or 6 point configurations.

A typical starting point is a 4 point harness that is road-approved. This type will feature a standard buckle, similar to what you’d find in most cars, and 2 inch webbing. These harnesses typically have fixed-length upper shoulder straps and lap straps that adjust by pulling down.

For more information about shoulder straps and whether you need pull-up or pull-down adjusters, see the details further down this guide.

Examples of these harnesses include:

For those seeking something with a quicker release mechanism, a 4 or 6 point harness with FIA approval is a great option. This type of harness is also road-approved, with the exception of FIA-approved models that are designed for HANS devices only.

Examples of these include:

Track Day Use

Any of the TRS or Willans harnesses we list are suitable for track days. If you plan to use your Westfield on the road as well, it’s advisable to select a road-approved or road and FIA-approved version (as mentioned above).

We also carry harnesses that are manufactured to the same high standards but may not yet be FIA-certified due to the cost and time involved in the FIA approval process. These harnesses are perfect for track days but are not FIA or road-approved yet.

Examples of these include:

The Willans Westfield 4 Point and 6 Point Quick Adjuster Track Day Harnesses (the last two shown above) are ideal for Westfields with racing seats. Their aluminium adjusters for the lap straps connect directly to the quick-release buckle, offering maximum adjustment and easy access to the adjusters. These harnesses are awaiting FIA approval but are currently available exclusively from us in this track-day configuration. Note that while many Westfield owners use these non-FIA approved track day harnesses on the road, they are really intended for track day use only.

FIA Approved

There are two types of FIA harnesses:

  1. FIA-approved harnesses without a HANS device
  2. FIA-approved harnesses exclusively with a HANS device

FIA Use Without a HANS Device

As mentioned in the road section, FIA-approved harnesses are road-legal unless they are specifically "HANS-only" models. These Westfield harnesses are perfect for FIA use without a HANS device and road use:

FIA Use Exclusively With a HANS Device

These harnesses are designed specifically for use with HANS (Head and Neck Support) devices, which are often required in competitive racing. They feature 2 inch (or 3 inch reducing to 2 inch) shoulder straps. Examples include:

The TRS Westfield International 6 Point Quick Adjuster harness listed above features the ultimate in quick adjuster technology, making it perfect for use with FIA-approved racing seats. The lap adjusters are integrated with the quick-release buckle and include grab loops, ensuring easy access and maximum adjustability. Please note that while some Westfield owners use these harnesses on the road, they are officially approved for track day use (with or without a HANS device) and FIA use (only with a HANS device).

FIA Harnesses

Shoulder Straps

The upper shoulder straps on Westfield harnesses are typically 45cm from the adjuster to the fixing point.

Standard harnesses come with sewn-on shoulder strap fixings as standard, which helps avoid excess webbing in the cockpit. However, if you prefer, you can opt for adjustable upper shoulder straps with removable fixing points (instead of sewn-on). This allows for greater flexibility, though it will involve some extra setup.

The adjustment range of the lower shoulder strap is between 10cm and 40cm.

Fixing Points

Our Westfield harnesses come with the following standard fixing points and bolts:

4 Point Road Harnesses
These harnesses are provided with anchor plates and 7/16" UNF bolts. The anchor plates have a 15mm hole and come with a top hat spacer to reduce the hole size to the proper diameter for the bolts, allowing the anchor plates to rotate slightly when in position.

4 Point FIA Harnesses
These harnesses are provided with anchor plates and 7/16" UNF bolts. The anchor plates have a 13mm hole and are supplied with a top hat spacer to reduce the hole size to the correct diameter for the bolts, allowing the anchor plates to rotate slightly when in position.

6 Point FIA Harnesses
These harnesses come with anchor plates and 7/16" UNF bolts. The anchor plates on the shoulder and lap straps have a 15mm hole, while the anchor plates for the crutch straps have a 13mm hole. Top hat spacers are supplied to ensure proper fitment.

Adjusters

You can upgrade your Westfield harnesses to Superlite or Ultralite versions. As standard TRS harnesses use steel anti-creep adjusters. Also available are premium aluminium alloy adjusters, which in addition to being lightweight, offer a smoother and faster adjustment. The Superlite harnesses use these lightweight aluminium adjusters on the shoulder straps, and the Ultralite harnesses use them on both the shoulder and lap straps.

They are highly recommended for vehicles being shared between multiple drivers, and in general we always recommend upgrading to the aluminium adjusters due to their premium look and feel.

Pull Up or Pull Down Lap Strap Adjusters

We offer lap straps with either pull-up or pull-down adjusters. For easier access, we recommend pull-down adjusters, which are positioned approximately 12cm from the buckle. This positioning ensures the adjusters are within easy reach.

Pull-up adjusters, on the other hand, sit about 12cm from the end of the lap strap, making them harder to access. While we generally recommend pull-down adjusters, we can provide pull-up adjusters at different distances if preferred. Some customers have opted for pull-up adjusters placed 22cm from the fixing point, depending on their vehicle and seat setup.

Some harnesses, such as the TRS Westfield International 6 Point FIA Harness with Quick Adjuster (HANS Only) and Willans Westfield 4 Point Track Day Harness with Quick Adjuster, feature integrated lap adjusters that are always accessible and offer the maximum range of adjustment.

Willans or TRS?

Not sure which brand is right for you?
Choosing between Willans and TRS is similar to selecting between luxury car brands like Volkswagen and Audi, or Rolls Royce and Bentley. Both brands deliver top-quality harnesses, and each offers excellent performance.

Some Westfield owners may have an affinity for Willans, recalling its pioneering role in motorsport safety during the Jackie Stewart era. Others might lean towards TRS, appreciating its widespread use in contemporary motorsport.

Both brands offer harnesses with various features, which may influence your decision. We’re big fans of both and are happy to recommend either based on your needs.
