Equipping your Porsche 911 with the perfect harness is crucial for performance and safety. 911s have compact interiors, requiring harnesses that provide a precise fit without excess webbing, whilst also maintaining ease of adjustment.

For Porsche 911s, shoulder straps must be fixed by wrapping them around a roll or harness bar specifically designed for the model. Our harnesses come with shoulder straps that feature no fixed ends, enabling secure wrap-around installation. They come with snap hook fixings that are easily removed to accomodate this.

This buying guide deals with harnesses specifically for Porsche 911, but we do also offer a harness for the Porsche Cayman GT4. Click here for details.

Where do you start?

Consider whether your Porsche 911 is destined for road driving, track days, or FIA-certified racing events.

Road Use

If you need a road-approved harness for your Porsche 911, you’ll find options in both 4 point and 6 point configurations.

A 4 point harness is often the first choice for road driving. It usually includes a standard buckle similar to factory seat belts and features durable 2 inch-wide webbing. Like all our harnesses, the shoulder straps are designed for wrap-around mounting as outlined above.

Examples of road-legal harnesses:

For enhanced safety and a more sophisticated release mechanism, consider an FIA-approved 4 point or 6 point harness. Some FIA-certified harnesses are also road-legal (though others are intended exclusively for use with HANS devices and are therefore not road legal).

Examples include:

Track Day Use

If your Porsche 911 will be used for track days, both TRS and Willans harnesses offer exceptional options. For dual-purpose cars that will also be driven on public roads, opting for road-legal or FIA-approved options is the sensible choice.

We do, however, also offer harnesses made to FIA standards but without official certification. These are ideal for track days but not FIA-sanctioned events or road use.

Examples of track-day harnesses:

Willans Porsche 911 4 Point and 6 Point Quick Adjuster Track Day Harnesses are particularly popular with Porsche 911 drivers who have upgraded to racing seats. The quick-release buckle with integrated lap adjusters ensures convenient and precise fitting. While these models are not FIA-certified, many Porsche enthusiasts still use them for road driving, although their primary design is for track events.

FIA Approved

FIA-approved harnesses are categorised as follows:

  1. FIA-certified harnesses without a HANS device
  2. FIA-certified harnesses specifically for use with a HANS device

FIA Use Without a HANS Device

For those who need FIA compliance without using a HANS device, the following harnesses are excellent choices for track and road use:

FIA Use Exclusively With a HANS Device

FIA-certified harnesses intended for use with a HANS (or FHR) device are designed for competitive racing. These harnesses typically have shoulder straps that are 2 inches wide, or taper from 3 inches to 2 inches to integrate with the HANS device. Examples include:

The TRS Porsche 911 International 6 Point Quick Adjuster Harness is a standout option for racing seats, thanks to its easy lap strap adjustment (please note that many Porsche owners do use these on the road, but they are only approved for track day use (with or without a HANS device) and FIA use (with a HANS device).

Wrap Around Shoulder Straps Fixings

The shoulder straps on our Porsche 911 Harnesses are designed to wrap around a harness or roll bar. Here's a bit more information on how this works. Please note that for the best fit and safety, always follow the installation instructions provided with the harness and your car’s roll bar or harness bar manufacturer.

- Keep the length of the strap as short as possible
- Optimum angle of -10°, never an upward angle
- Keep the 3 bar slide snug up against the tube
- Always remember to loop back on yourself when threading up
- Leave at least a 10cm tail
- Cross over shoulder straps if the tube is more than 50cm
behind the seat
- Use book end stoppers to prevent lateral movement
- Wrap around helps save weight

When wrapping harnesses around the roll cage there are several safety considerations to be aware of. Always make sure that the webbing passes smoothly through the seat opening and is not chaffing on any seat mounts or sharp edges. Sharp edges can cause the webbing to abrade or cut. Always make sure that the 3 bar slide is as close to the harness bar as possible. This is important because a lose 3 bar slide can cause slippage. When wrapping around the roll cage always make sure that you remember the final locking loop. Once you have done the final locking loop make sure that you have at least 10-15cm of web as a tail. Excess webbing can be neatly rolled up and cable tied out of the way.

The shorter the strap the better. This is because polyester webbing has a typical elongation of 3-5%, and the shorter the strap the less elongation during crash conditions. If the roll cage is more than 50cm behind the seat, we recommend that you cross the shoulder straps over. This increases stability during a
crash.

The optimum angle for wrapping around the roll cage is -10°. Any angle between 0° to -30° is acceptable, but never an upward angle. To prevent lateral movements of the shoulder straps whilst going around a corner, bookend the location of the straps with stoppers. This will stop the belts sliding along the tube when you go around a corner.

Adjusters

You can upgrade your Porsche 911 harnesses to Superlite or Ultralite versions. As standard TRS harnesses use steel anti-creep adjusters. Also available are premium aluminium alloy adjusters, which in addition to being lightweight, offer a smoother and faster adjustment. The Superlite harnesses use these lightweight aluminium adjusters on the shoulder straps, and the Ultralite harnesses use them on both the shoulder and lap straps.

They are highly recommended for vehicles being shared between multiple drivers, and in general we always recommend upgrading to the aluminium adjusters due to their premium look and feel.

Pull-Up or Pull-Down Lap Strap Adjusters

Lap strap adjusters for Porsche 911 harnesses come in two main styles: pull-up and pull-down. Choosing the right style depends on your seating configuration and personal preference.

We generally recommend pull-down adjusters. Positioned approximately 12 cm from the buckle, these adjusters are easily accessible within the seating area, ensuring convenient adjustments during use.

Pull-up adjusters are positioned closer to the fixing point at the end of the lap strap. While they are less accessible, they can be custom-specified for unique seating setups. If you prefer pull-up adjusters, we can provide harnesses tailored to your requirements.

Some models, such as the TRS Porsche 911 International 6 Point FIA Harness with Quick Adjuster (HANS Only), integrate adjusters directly into the buckle system for maximum ease and adjustability.

Please note that Porsche 911 models 996 and 997, need special harnesses with unique lap strap fixings...

Willans or TRS?
