Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between “side mounts”, “sub frames” and “seat runners”?
Side-mounted seats have bolt holes on both sides of the seat. The side mounts are fitted to the car (often directly to the floor) then bolt to the sides of the seat. Seats used for competition purposes always fit like this. It is also becoming more popular to fit these type of seats to road cars. You can view our range of side mounts here.
Base-mounted seats have bolt-holes on the bottom of the seat that fix to the car using sub frames or seat runners. Most road car seats fix to the car in this way. A sub frame is tailored to the specific vehicle it is intended to fit.
Seat runners are a universal product designed to fit the seat only - these are sometimes fixed directly to the floor (this is often the case with classic cars where the seat sits very low). If additional height is required and a tailored sub frame is not available then a frame or box of some description can be fabricated for the runners to be fixed to.
Side-mounted seats are usually fixed in position, whereas seats fitted with sub frames or seat runners can be moved backwards and forwards.
How do I fit base-mounted road seats into my car?
Cobra produce a range of subframes that enable seats to be fitted directly into a many cars. They are tailored to each vehicle and bolt straight in. If a frame is not available it is possible to buy a pair of runners that bolt to the seat and would in turn bolt to either the floor or, where additional height is required, a fabricated metal frame affixed to the car.
If I have competition seats fitted to my road car with side mounts will I be able to slide the seat backwards and forwards?
Cobra side-mounted seats are ordinarily fitted directly to the floor - this is a requirement if the vehicle is being used in motorsport. However, if you are fitting a side-mounted seat to a road car, and you want to be able to move the seat backwards and forwards on runners, then you can use Cobra Adaption Bars to attach your side mounts to runners or a tailored sub frame.
If a sub frame is not available for my car or van can you still fit the seats I want?
As stated above, yes, in most cases but a frame may need to be fabricated and used along with other parts such as runners or side mounts.
Is it possible to use other manufacturer’s sub frames to fit Cobra Seats?
In some cases we are able to do this. Corbeau offer a range and it is possible they might have what is required. Other manufacturer's sub frames do not match the hole pattern required for the seats.

What is the difference between the GRP and Carbon Fibre Motorsport Seats?
The Motorsport seats we offer have a composite shell that is either manufactured from GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) or Carbon Fibre.
Carbon Fibre is the most expensive; it is the lightest and strongest material we use.
GRP is our most popular and least expensive option. It is still very strong and it meets the exacting FIA regulations.
What are Pro Fit cushions and how do I know what size to order?
Pro Fit cushions are a unique padding system designed by Cobra to help accommodate a wider range of fitments within a standard range of seats.
The benefits are that the user is more accurately positioned in the seat so that the harness and HANS device work to their full potential; the user is more comfortable and ultimately safety is maximised. It is especially useful if several drivers are using the same vehicle; allowing the seat position to be optimised for each driver without having to adjust the seat on it’s side mounts. With fast removal and repositioning driver changes can be accommodated with ease. Each composite Cobra motorsport seat is supplied as standard with a base and knee cushion available in three depths or profiles (Low, Medium or High) along with a backrest available in two depths (Low or Medium).
Using up to 18 different cushion combinations for each seat, Cobra Pro Fit compensates for differences in torso and leg length to give the ideal H point, shoulder and leg positioning no matter what your shape and size.
Each seat that uses the Pro Fit system will be supplied with Medium/Medium/Medium cushions as standard. To change the cushions you require please make your selection from the dropdown menus on the product page. For advice on the Pro Fit cushion size best suited to you please contact us on 01582 787377 or email sales@carnoisseur.com.
What is HANS compatibility?
A HANS compatible seat is specifically designed so that it does not interfere with a HANS device.
What is the Outlast Cooling System?
Outlast Technology was originally developed for NASA to protect astronauts from temperature fluctuations. The temperature corridor within which the human body feels comfortable is relatively narrow. Outlast Technology helps to smooth changes in temperature within this corridor, maintaining a more consistent temperature range.
Outlast fabric is used as standard on all Cobra Technology motorsport seats. It is also available as a bespoke option on the whole range of Cobra motorsport seats - please contact us for a quote by calling 01582 787377 or email sales@carnoisseur.com.
